Background of the study
High blood pressure is a pervasive health concern, and traditional medicine continues to play a critical role in its management in many communities. In Ilesha West Local Government, Osun State, indigenous remedies and practices have been used for generations to treat hypertension (Adewale, 2023). These traditional treatments often involve herbal concoctions, dietary modifications, and lifestyle recommendations rooted in cultural practices (Olusola, 2024). Despite the availability of modern antihypertensive medications, a significant proportion of the population continues to rely on traditional methods due to cultural familiarity, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility (Balogun, 2025). This study evaluates the usage, efficacy, and safety of traditional medicine in managing high blood pressure. By exploring community perceptions, treatment outcomes, and the integration of traditional and modern therapies, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment that could inform health policy and improve hypertension management strategies.
Statement of the problem
In Ilesha West, the reliance on traditional medicine for high blood pressure management raises concerns regarding the consistency and safety of these treatments. While many residents trust indigenous remedies, the lack of standardized dosages and clinical validation poses risks to patient health (Adewale, 2023; Balogun, 2025). This discrepancy between traditional practices and modern medical standards necessitates a critical evaluation to ensure that patients receive effective and safe treatment options. The study seeks to bridge the gap between cultural practices and clinical guidelines in hypertension management.
